What kind of orthopedic problems can pets have?

After a physical exam, X-ray and other diagnostics, some of the most common orthopedic problems we see in our patients are:

  • Arthritis
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Knee pain
  • Fractures and breaks
  • Dislocated hips

How long does orthopedic surgery take?

It will vary depending on the specific kind of procedure your pet will undergo as well as the severity of the condition. It may take anywhere from 1 hour to several hours, taking up the majority of the day. As well, your pet may need to stay with us after the surgery depending on their case. Fear not, because your veterinarian will explain the entire process with you and your family to minimize as much of your worry as possible.

How do I know if my pet is a good candidate for orthopedic surgery?

It all depends on their general health status and specific orthopedic problem. Usually, younger pets can bounce back much faster from surgeries versus older pets. If your pet is already in their senior years, we might recommend less invasive options first (e.g. rehab, supplements, acupuncture) before opting to go under the knife.
