Dermatology Services for Pets

Just like humans, the skin is the largest organ in a pet’s body. Their hair, skin, fur and nails are some of the most impactful aspects of their health. When everything is working properly, it is of no consequence. But just one small rash can cause a great deal of pain and complications if left untreated. Here at Ganaraska Animal Clinic, we provide a full roster of care to keep your pet’s skin looking fresh and as healthy as possible. Call us at 905.885.8151 to learn more about our range of preventative treatments and active therapies.

How can I tell if my dog or cat’s scratching is normal?

Yes, all pets display a certain level of scratching and licking. When dogs get the “zoomies” scratching may be one of the things they do repeatedly. If their movements are causing inflammation or sores then it may be time to reach out to us. The following signs may also indicate an underlying problem versus a harmless habit:

  • Unpleasant odour at area being scratched/licked/bitten
  • Hair loss
  • Anal gland problems
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability

What causes skin issues in pets?

Your furry family member’s dermatological woes are usually caused by these major factors:

  • Yeast and bacterial infections
  • Allergies to certain foods, dust, pollen, plants, grasses, etc.
  • Parasites like fleas, ticks and ringworm
  • “Hot spots” or areas underneath fur with painful sores

How are skin problems in pets treated?

After a consultation with one of our veterinarians, your pet will have a treatment plan created specifically for their case, lifestyle and your preference. It can include one or a combination of topical/oral medications, injections and environmental changes (e.g. if your pet is allergic to certain plants, then you will have to remove them from your home or avoid them on your walks).
